Ambassador makes bid for PH renewable energy sector at ASEAN-China Week
12 August 2024, Shanxi Province, China – Ambassador Jaime A. FlorCruz encouraged Chinese investors to invest in the renewable energy sector in the Philippines during the recently concluded ASEAN-China Week.
The gathering was held in Shanxi province with the theme "ASEAN-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: Achieving Prosperity through Innovation”. It was attended, among others, by government officials, diplomatic envoys, and business leaders.
Ambassador FlorCruz said the Philippines has improved its regulatory environment to attract more foreign businesses.
He cited that the Philippines’ National Renewable Energy Program sets a target of at least 35 percent Renewable Energy share in the power generation mix by 2023. He said the Philippines hopes to increase that share to 50 percent by 2040.
Along with Ambassador FlorCruz, Mr. Benito Gosiaco Techico, Special Envoy of the President to China for Trade, Investments and Tourism, and Commercial Consul Glenn Peñaranda presented opportunities in the Philippines.
On Tourism promotion, Ambassador FlorCruz highlighted tourism destinations in the Philippines.
He said the country has gained global recognition as Asia’s Leading Dive Destination and the World’s Leading Dive Destination by the World Travel Awards (from 2019 to 2023), and the Best Destination for Shore Diving in the 2022 Scuba Diving Readers’ Choice Awards. (30)
Ambassador hails Oishi for “waving PH flag” in China
20 August 2024, Shanghai – Ambassador Jaime A. FlorCruz hailed the Filipino company Liwayway for “waving the Philippine flag” in China due to the success and popularity of its snack brand Oishi.
“I appreciate your efforts in waving the Philippine flag, not just in China, but overseas,” Ambassador FlorCruz said during a visit to the Liwayway headquarters in Shanghai.
A proudly FIlipino company, the Philippine flag is hoisted in Liwayway factories all over China, and in different parts of the world. A number of its advertisements in China even feature tourist spots from the Philippines.
Apart from China, Liwayway has presence in Southeast Asia, South Asia, South Africa, and, most recently, in Uzbekistan.
Ambassador FlorCruz praised Liwayway for its “successes not just as an enterprise… but also as corporate leaders in social responsibility.”
Oishi’s tagline in Mandarin -- “Shanghaojia!” -- means “topmost, best, excellent.” Oishi also means “delicious” in Japanese. Oishi’s vast reach and popularity in China show that it has lived up to the brand’s expectations.
According to the Ambassador, Liwayway’s success and expansion in China through the years are a bright sustaining force contributing positively to Philippine-China relations.
At present, Liwayway operates 12 factories in different parts of China. It was in the 1990s when Liwayway chairman Carlos entered the Chinese market, just as China was opening up. (30)
Filipino places 6th in Asian Seniors Chess Championships
18 August 2024, Ulaanbaatar – While admittedly a “later-comer” in the sport professionally, a Filipino recently made waves in an international chess tournament held in Mongolia.
Jose Efren Bagamasbad placed 6th in the recently concluded Asian Seniors Championships held Ulaanbaatar on 09-19 August 2024.
Mr. Bagamasbad, 67, competed in the 65-year-old-and-above category.
The Asian Chess Championships are held annually, with two categories: the 50-64 year-old category and the one with players 65 years old and above.
It is not the first time Mr. Bagamasbad competed in the Asian Seniors Chess Championships; He earned the title of “International Master” when it was held in New Zealand in 2022, while he was champion when it was held in the Philippines last year.
Chess started out as a hobby for Mr. Bagamasbad, he said when he spoke with the Philippine Embassy in Beijing, which covers the Philippines’ diplomatic relations with Mongolia.
Philippine Ambassador Jaime A. FlorCruz congratulated the Filipino chess player. “Efren’s triumph is proof of the importance of pursuing one’s passions, because there can be no limits if we put our minds to it,” the Ambassador said.
While he started playing chess as early as 8 years old, it was his studies that his father wanted him to focus on. Eventually, he would earn a Chemical Engineering degree in 1979.
“Chess was a hobby of mine during that time,” he said.
With his day job, he would be able to join his first international tournament only in 1990, and only because it was held in Manila. He reached the finals of the Far East Chess Open, earning him the title of “National Master.”
He would join another international tournament in 2006, one that was held in Malaysia – by then he was already retired.
He may have started late, but it is all worth it for Mr. Bagamasbad, as he now gets to play a sport that has long been his passion.
In November this year, he hopes to compete in the World Senior Championships in Portugal (30)
