On the occasion of the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood, the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines gathered Filipinos as well as their families and friends in Beijing in a celebration of culture, unity and resilience on 11 June 2023. Co-organized by the Embassy and Filipino community groups in Beijing and nearby municipalities, the event marked a milestone showcasing the ‘fiesta’ spirit, following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in the past three (3) years.
Ambassador Jaime A. FlorCruz formally opened the festivities with a heartfelt address, in which he emphasized the importance of preserving traditions and fostering community bonds during these extraordinary times. In remembering the sacrifices of Filipinos towards achieving independence, Ambassador FlorCruz urged the attendees to embrace their heritage with pride and honor.
The event was filled with a multitude of activities, cultural performances and Filipino games that delighted the senses and brought smiles to the faces of all participants. Members of the Filipino community likewise showcased their talents through mesmerizing local dances and enchanting music in a display of the Filipino heritage.
An array of Filipino delicacies and traditional dishes were made available for everyone to enjoy. From the thirst-quenching samalamig to the mouthwatering lechon, attendees indulged in a gastronomic adventure, savoring the authentic flavors that define Filipino cuisine. In addition, a wide range of Filipino products were offered to participants, allowing them to bring a piece of the Philippines home with them while supporting Filipino businesses based in China.
The fiesta served as a powerful reminder of the strength and unwavering spirit of the Filipino Community. It brought Filipinos in Beijing people together, fostering “pakikisama” or a sense of belonging and “bayanihan” or unity despite their diverse backgrounds. It became a platform through which Filipinos could renew their appreciation of their national heritage and pride most aptly on the occasion of the anniversary of Philippine Independence.
