Philippine Embassy in Beijing Attends the ASEAN-China Forum of Youth and Humanities “Respect, Respond and Rehab in Humanities – Youth Role on 16-18 June 2016 in Jilin

20 June 2016 – The Embassy attended the ASEAN-China Forum of Youth and Humanities “Respect, Respond and Rehab in Humanities – Youth Role on 16-18 June 2016 in Changchun, northeast China Jilin province.

 

The forum organized by the ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) in collaboration with the Education Office of the Embassy of Malaysia and Jilin University (JLU) aimed at enhancing awareness among ASEAN-China youths of the significance of the growing relationship between ASEAN and China.

The forum was attended by ACC Secretary General Yang Xiuping and ACC officers; Embassy representatives from the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam; and professors and international students of JLU.

In her remarks, ACC Secretary General Yang noted that 2016 is a special year as it marks the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-China dialogue relations. She said ACC is committed to strengthening cooperation in education as it enhances people-to-people connectivity between ASEAN and China. She expressed hope that through education forums, ASEAN and China would be able to achieve the target of having 100,000 ASEAN students studying in China by 2020.

In the keynote speeches, Education Counselor Dr. Mohd Rozi Ismail of the Embassy of Malaysia urged the youth to think out of the box in order to effectively take on more responsibilities and respond to the needs of society, while JLU Dean Chen Dingding emphasized the importance of mutual respect and active people-to-people connections.  

ASEAN students rendered song and dance numbers during the opening ceremony, and set up country-themed booths for the cultural show. The students were divided into six (6) groups to discuss and present on the following topics: (a) cyberspace and interpersonal relations, (b) economic development and inter-dependence between ASEAN and China, (c) climate change and global warming, (d) volunteer spirit and youth role, (e) human security and social development, and (f) common culture and values in ASEAN and China.

Two (2) Filipino students, Brian Uy Doce and Francis Martinez Esteban, enrolled in JLU’s School of International and Public Affairs participated in the Forum. END
