On 15 June 2014, the Philippine Embassy celebrated the 116th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with members of the Filipino community. More than 200 members of the Filipino community in Northern China joined the Embassy for the get-together.
“Walang pagdududa sa akin na kayong lahat ay kabilang sa mga dakilang Pilipino na dapat tingalain at magsilbing halimbawa para sa marami nating kababayan. Bukod sa inyong ‘di-mapapantayang sakripisyo sa pangingibang-bayan upang itaguyod ang inyong pamilya at upang matamo ang inyong mga pangarap, kayo rin ay nagsusumikap upang magsilbing mabuting kinatawan ng ating bansa at tulungan ito sa abot ng inyong makakaya…..Umaasa ako na kayo ay patuloy na magbibigay ng karangalan sa ating bayan at maging inspirasyon din hindi lang sa ating kapwa Pilipino ngunit pati narin sa inyong mga nakakasalamuha sa bansang Tsina.”
In her opening remarks, Ambassador Erlinda F. Basilio reminded the members of the Filipino community to draw inspiration from our heroes’ sacrifice and bravery and to remain good representatives of our country abroad. This was followed by the reading of the President’s Independence Day message by DCM and Consul General Evangeline T. Ong Jimenez-Ducrocq.
Public service reminders on overseas voting registration, renewal of passports, registration with the Embassy, alert on MERS-CoV and warning against drug trafficking were also announced during the program. In addition, an overseas voting registration desk was set up during the event enabling qualified Filipinos to register.

The Colors of Freedom Exhibit on the history of the Philippine flag was mounted at the Embassy for the Filipino community. “Tipong Pinoy” videos on Philippine culture and history, produced by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), were screened at the Embassy’s Library for educational purposes.
Guests enjoyed the afternoon feasting on Filipino food prepared by the Embassy, participating in various parlor games, and watching the song and dance numbers from members of the community.
