Beijing, PRC – H.E. Jose Santiago L. Sta. Romana, Ambassador of the Philippines to China, led the Philippine Embassy in Beijing’s activities in observance of the 125th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal last 30 December 2021. As a COVID-19 precautionary measure, personnel of the Embassy attended the event.

Ambassador Sta. Romana led the flag-raising ceremony and wreath laying before the bust of Dr. Rizal, which is permanently situated at the Embassy’s Sentro Rizal Hall. Afterwards, he delivered a speech in which he underscored how Rizal’s legacy should serve as an inspiration to strive for excellence and honor in public service. He shared a quote from Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere, which goes “Let us not ask that he who comes as an outsider to make his fortune and go away afterwards should interest himself in the welfare of the Philippines.”

After the solemn ceremony, the Embassy, under its Sentro Rizal mandate, hosted a film screening of Nicolas B. Pichay’s “Rizal’s Pen” (2021), which was held in concert with the film’s world premiere as shepherded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and in cooperation with other participating Philippine Embassies around the globe.
