The Philippine Embassy in Beijing reminds everyone to be cautious in their online dealings and transactions, especially when sending money to those they have not met personally.
- When making online purchases or transacting online with suppliers, always check suppliers’ details and verify suppliers’ track record. For those already dealing with long-time suppliers, if there is a sudden notification to change procedure or to send remittance to another account, call your contact first to verify information before making any payment.
- Exercise caution in using any dating website. If your online partner requests you to send large sums of money for whatever reason – to pay for hospitalization needs or to pay off airport detention charges – check with the authorities concerned (e.g. hospital, airport authorities) to verify the information.
Online scams continue to victimize the unsuspecting and well-meaning. A few minutes of caution can save you months and years of misery. Please be careful.
