1. In line with the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) standard requirement that all non-machine readable passports be out of circulation before 24 November 2015, the Embassy wishes to inform the Filipino community that the extension of the validity of machine ready readable passports (MRRPs) – the green passports – has been discontinued.
Filipinos who still carry this type of passport are requested to visit the Embassy and apply for their new ePassports as soon as possible, especially if the validity of their MRRP is six (6) months or less. Please note that the processing period for the ePassport takes at least six (6) weeks.
2. The validity of current machine readable passports (MRPs) will be extended only once for two (2) years but not beyond 31 October 2015.
Extensions will be made on the following conditions:
- There is a death in the family that requires OFW and members of his/her dependent family to urgently travel to the Philippines;
- Medical emergency requiring the OFW and members of his/her dependent family to urgently travel to the Philippines or to another country for medical treatment;
- OFWs returning to their employers abroad with valid employment contracts processed by the POEA';
- Application for ePassport has been filed with the Embassy prior to the application for extension of passport validity;
- Presentation of proof of urgency such as death certificate, medical certificate, valid employment contracts processed by the POEA or Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) of Post together with plane tickets with confirmed flight details; and
- Payment of consular fees for extension of passport validity.
3. OFWs returning to the Philippines for good and whose work contracts were completed, residence visas were cancelled by their employers or immigration authorities of the host country, and if it is no longer necessary for them to file an application for ePassport at Post, will be issued a one-way Travel Document, with fee, instead of extending their passports' validity.
4. Applications for the extension of the validity of passports of persons travelling for visit or tourism purposes only will not be accepted.
